Sustainable tourism represents an innovative approach to travel and offers a significant alternative to overtourism in traditional tourist destinations. Sustainable, or responsible, tourism’s primary goal is to minimize its environmental impact. It also promotes local community traditions while respecting their specificities.

This new approach is the foundation of the Memoriae Maris project and the Pélagos Museum of the Sea. However, this is not enough to enhance the beautiful territory of the “Capo Rizzuto” Marine Protected Area (MPA). It is essential that both the local community and visitors actively contribute to respecting and promoting these magnificent places. Below are some of the rules that responsible tourists should follow in line with the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, drafted by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO):

Education and Awareness
Responsible tourists seek to inform themselves about the destination they are visiting, its history, culture, and environmental challenges. They also aim to educate themselves and others on responsible tourism practices.

Respect for Local Culture
The responsible tourist is committed to conducting their tourist activities in perfect harmony with the distinctive characteristics and genuine traditions of the local communities.

Sustainability
One of the strengths of responsible tourism is the choice of accommodations, transportation, and activities that fully embrace sustainability principles.

Respect for the Environment
Responsible tourists demonstrate their commitment to the environment by recycling and disposing of waste in an ecologically conscious manner. They also embrace the “take nothing” ethic, avoiding the collection of shells, stones, sand, and other natural elements, allowing nature to maintain its balance.

Conservation of Nature
The responsible tourist is aware of the importance of protecting and conserving local flora and fauna. They adhere to the rules in effect in the areas they visit, contributing to the protection of natural ecosystems.
